I’ve driven past this scene along Route 8 and admired it many times on my way to the
Village of Speculator, but usually in the middle of the day when the lighting was poor. Prior to
purchasing kayaks, my wife and I rented a kayak near the outlet into Lake Pleasant and kayaked
a ways up the outlet at this location. In 2024 I stayed at a motel on Oxbow Lake, about 7 miles
west of this image. Waking at 5:30 in the morning, I grabbed my camera and tripod to drive to
the scene. While the lighting was beautiful on Oxbow Lake, the cloud cover at the outlet
prevented good lighting. Thus I returned to my motel for breakfast. The next morning I returned
to the location and found the lighting much improved. I took several images as the lighting
changed and settled on this image as the sunlight started to illuminate the trees in the middle left
of the scene. The flowers at the bottom edge of the image add additional depth as the stream
leads the viewer past the beaver lodge into the image.
