Encaustic is an ancient medium which involves painting with pigments suspended in melted wax. This 3 week class is designed for anyone who is really interested in a deep exploration of this intriguing medium. We will discuss various substrate options and the different tools used for applying and manipulating the paint. Techniques to be explored include the basics of fusing and layering. A deeper dive will explore using heat guns, torches or irons, adding and exposing layers, inclusions, intarsia, texturing, and scratch writing.  Incorporating oil sticks, oil pencils, mica powders, and other materials will also be considered. Participants are encouraged to explore their own style and preferences as they work through the medium. Students will end up with 2 finished pieces: one with encaustic intarsia and one with collaged materials, both on 8”x8” cradled birch panels.
